Switzerland is a country synonymous with breathtaking landscapes and efficient rail travel. This past December, we embarked on a spectacular journey traversing the Swiss Alps aboard two of the world’s most scenic trains: the Bernina Express and the Glacier Express. Our itinerary took us from London to Zurich, onward to Chur, across the Alps to Tirano, then through Brig to Geneva, before flying home. Here’s a look at this unforgettable experience.
Day 1: Arrival in Zurich and Transfer to Chur
Our journey began with an early morning EasyJet flight from London Gatwick to Zurich, touching down just after 9 AM. With Switzerland’s famously punctual trains, we quickly transferred from Zurich Airport to Zurich HB, catching a connection to Chur, the country’s oldest city. Chur, nestled amidst the Swiss mountains, served as the perfect base for the next two nights. we stayed at Central Hotel Post, a charming and comfortable hotel offering a great breakfast to fuel my adventures.
Day 2: The Majestic Bernina Express – Chur to Tirano Round Trip
Christmas Eve was reserved for the Bernina Express, the famous red train that journeys through the heart of the Alps. Departing Chur at 08:28, we was soon mesmerised by the stunning landscapes unfolding outside the panoramic windows. This UNESCO-listed route traverses 55 tunnels and 196 bridges, including the awe-inspiring Landwasser Viaduct and the dramatic Brusio Circular Viaduct.
From glacial views at Morteratsch to the shimmering Lago Bianco, the scenery was nothing short of magical. Upon reaching Tirano, a charming Italian town, we enjoyed a leisurely lunch before boarding the return train at 14:24, arriving back in Chur in time for a festive evening stroll.
Day 3: Christmas Day on the Glacier Express – Chur to Brig
What better way to celebrate Christmas than aboard the Glacier Express, famously known as the ‘slowest express train in the world’? Departing Chur at 11:55, the journey to Brig was an indulgence in panoramic Alpine splendour. With snow-capped peaks, deep gorges, and traditional Swiss villages passing by, the experience felt like a moving postcard. The optional three-course meal onboard, priced at £59, added an extra touch of luxury.
Arriving in Brig by late afternoon, we checked into Hotel Stockalperhof, a cosy stay in the heart of this historic town. The evening was spent exploring the picturesque streets and marvelling at the impressive Stockalper Palace.
Day 4: Brig to Geneva – A Scenic Rail Transfer
After a leisurely morning in Brig, we boarded a train to Geneva, a city famed for its lakeside beauty and international significance. The journey itself was another scenic delight, passing through stunning valleys and charming Swiss towns. Our accommodation for the night was Hotel Bernina, conveniently located for exploring the city’s highlights, including the Jet d’Eau and the Old Town.
Day 5: Farewell, Switzerland – Geneva to London Gatwick
All good things must come to an end, and on 27th December, we boarded our flight back to London Gatwick, bringing the Swiss rail adventure to a close.
Final Thoughts
This journey was an absolute dream for train lovers and scenic travel enthusiasts alike. From the engineering marvels of the Bernina Express to the leisurely luxury of the Glacier Express, every moment was filled with awe-inspiring views and seamless Swiss efficiency.
